Saturday-Sunday, October 17-18, Wilderness First Aid Course, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Rio Grande Chapter os sponsoring a Wilderness First Aid course. This course is in high demand and typically fills up months in advance. The SOLO Wilderness First Aid Course is a two-day training for anyone who spends time hiking, skiing, engaging in other outdoor pursuits or just wants to know what to do when things go wrong. The course is a blend of lecture, demonstrations and scenarios. Students will have ample opportunity to practice skills in life-like situations, both as patients and caregivers. At the successful completion of the course, you will be certified or re-certified in Wilderness First Aid. Attendees must participate in all portions and all hours of the course and demonstrate understanding to obtain certification. Why should you attend? People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? If you’re ever more than an hour away from a hospital or one mile from any road, you need to know what to do. Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one — and maybe even save a life. For more information on SOLO’s curriculum, visit www.soloschools.com . Cancellation policy: Activity is held rain or shine, but may be altered due to inclement weather. Signup restrictions: The minimum age to attend this course is 14 years old.
Weather permitting, we’ll have at least a half hour on the top to rest, refuel and enjoy those views. If we’re lucky, we will hear bugling eElks and see the herds down in the valley. Bring binoculars, if interested. The trailhead is a one hour drive from Santa Fe. Hiking time is 3 or more hours. The hike is moderate with some short, steep parts. The total elevation gain is 1,300 feet in about 2.2 miles (round trip 4.5 miles), with the summit at 10,199 feet. The high altitude throughout hike can make it feel more challenging. This Acoma site dates back over 1,000 years, the oldest continuously human-inhabited site in New Mexico. History will be shared by our guide throughout the walk. Acoma offers a quiet place in the sky with views many miles in the distance in every direction and an opportunity to reflect on its history and local archeology.
Notes

Do you like to hike? Would you like to lead hikes? If so, please consider becoming a Sierra Club outings leader. Contact Debbie Bryant (bryade@gmail.com) for details.

Gauging interest in a second “Introduction to Backpacking” class this year. New Mexico has thousands of miles of trails waiting for you. Whether you want to get away for a weekend of solitude with your family or solo thru-hike from Mexico to Canada, adventure is, literally, right in our backyard. Perhaps you’re merely curious and not quite sure how to begin backpacking or even if it’s for you? This one-day class is always at capacity, so we are considering holding a second class this year. This clinic is designed for those who have never shouldered a backpack as well as those who just want to learn how to safely hike in the backcountry. If you are interested, please email Terry Owen (teowen@comcast.net).

July 2026

Friday, July 10 – Nambe Lake hike. Keep your eyes on the Santa Fe Sierra Club Meetup group as they do some beautiful hikes and this is just one example. The trail is 6.5 miles roundtrip with 2,000 ft elevation gain. The majority of the trail runs up along the creek, making this a very pleasant experience. When you get to the alpine lake, you will be stunned how beautiful it is. Well worth the hike up! The group will accommodate a range of hiking paces. There will be an option to eat and rest at leisure or take some of that break to hike around the lake before hiking back.

Wednesday, July 15 – Green Book Club. 6-7:30 pm. Join the Green Book Club to read and discuss a wide range of books that address different facets of green advocacy. This month’s choice is Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring.” Originally published in 1962, “Silent Spring” is an exploration of the dangers of DDT as it accumulated upwards in the environmental hierarchy, especially in birds. It was landmark advocacy writing that led to revolutionary changes in the laws and regulatory procedures affecting our land, air and water. The questions Carson raised are with us today in every discussion of how much of substance X can be released into the environment, who it will impact and who pays the costs (think in NM of “processed water”). Please bring your coffee and your book.
This trail is used by bird watchers and hosts several songbirds, ducks and hawks. The Eagle Creek Trail has a minimal elevation gain and we’ll discuss a little of its hydrology. We will also discuss & view two drinking ground water wells along the trail. QiGong is related to Tai Chi and after practice on paved trails, we’ll observe what is in bloom in this lush green meadow and see what insect pollinators are out. Along with nature illustrator and QiGong practitioner Laurie Lange, we will note how the drought has decreased our wildflowers and the severity of the loss. Not suitable for those with balance issues; long pants and closed toe shoes required. This will be less than a one-mile walk. Young adults encouraged; youth with parent or legal guardian.
This is the perfect outing for those who have never backpacked before and would like to give it a try in a low-risk environment. We will be accompanied by several experienced mentors. After meeting at the trailhead at 10 a.m., we’ll backpack approximately three miles into the backcountry, set up a base camp and then explore the surrounding area, where there are petroglyphs, slot canyons and a number of puebloan ruins. Saturday evening we’ll enjoy camping under the stars and learn more about the area’s history as well as backcountry safety. On Sunday we’ll continue our adventure until mid-morning, after which we’ll break camp and depart. Participants should be in good physical condition, be able to hike at least six miles while carrying up to 20 percent of their body weight, and climb 500 vertical feet over uneven terrain. This outing is appropriate for children 14 years of age and up when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The event is limited to 6 participants. Register for the outing no later than April 10 at the link below. A recommended gear list and driving directions will be provided to registered participants by April 11. This is at Gutierrez Canyon Open Space in Cedar Crest, and the parking lot is next to Rumors Brewing & Pizza. Bring at least a liter of water per person, good boots, hat, snacks and lunch. No dogs. Children 13 and over are welcome.
Attendees must take part in all portions and hours of the course to obtain certification.

Outings are normally free and open to non-members, although we do like it if you join the Club to increase our local and national clout.

Events can be also found on our event calendar, and many on the Chapter Meetup site. The Santa Fe Group outings are listed on their Meetup site. Remember that outings may be added or changed as the season progresses.

Important! We rely on participant self-screening to ensure an outing that is safe and appropriate for all. We will do our best to detail the outings so you can decide if your fitness level and experience are fitting. Some things to consider are the elevation:

Are you acclimatized to the stated elevations expected?

Are you recovering from sickness or medical procedure or taking any medication or have a recent change of medication that may reduce or impact your fitness and ability?

Do you have any issues or concerns that might impact you and possibly the whole group’s safety?

Please contact the outing leader with any questions or concerns.

Sign-up using the link below each listing. This link will take you to the calendar event listing with more information and registration.

We look forward to seeing you outside! We have quite a varied offering this Spring.

Congratulations to Antoinette Reyes in the Southern Group! Antoinette led a hike at Lucero Canyon to see some petroglyphs and fossils near Las Cruces in February and is now a certified Level 1 outings leader. Her hike was mentored by Holly Thomas and Debbie Bryant, and she achieved a great turnout. If you are interested in joining the next outing in the Las Cruces area, contact her at Antoinette.Reyes@sierraclub.org.

ICO (Inspiring Connections Outdoors) — We will be scheduling an Introductory Session soon in Santa Fe to encourage volunteers for hikes with youth. We want to encourage those in the Santa Fe/ Albuquerque area to sign up because if we don’t engage youth, we will have a harder time to persuade them to be environmentally friendly as adults. Please keep an eye on the web pages mentioned above. This is a great, fun way to give back and doesn’t require a large time investment. If you have questions, please email newmexicoico@gmail.com

Saturday, April 19: Inclusive / Accessible Mindful Birding: Sit & optional walk, 8:30-10:30 a.m. If you are new to birding, a disabled birder, seasoned birder, or just want to enjoy a nice morning in the Mesilla Valley State Park, you are welcome. Your guide – Holly loves exploring and sharing two of her greatest passions: birding and mindfulness practices. She says directing attention to the present moment with kindness and without judgment can lead to well-being. Quick IDs won’t be the focus of this outing. This part of the park has brick pavers and a network of crushed gravel/sand paths that weave throughout the area. We’ll spend up to 45 minutes here, where there usually are a variety of birds. After, we will have a short time to share any reflections. If you’d like to continue with an optional walk, we will explore. Trails are a mix of crushed gravel and sand that is firmly packed, but both have some sections that are sandier and softer. We will take a pace that accommodates the slowest person and allows for frequent pauses and time for noticing and reflection. Both trails have several benches along the way.
Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse.

June 2024

Saturday, June 29, Beginner/Moderate Bike Ride to Downtown Grower’s Market. Option to continue to Bike-In Coffee.
One opportunity to have fun in ABQ and explore while reducing car use is to bike to the Downtown Grower’s Market. Parking is limited near the market anyway, so take the opportunity to take a short bike ride for the last mile! The group will continue from the grower’s market to Bike In Coffee, just over 2 miles and sit under the trees and listen to music. Riders should plan to return with a group leader. This is an ideal opportunity for friends/family at varying levels of riding expertise to participate as there will be 2 trip leaders in order to accommodate different speeds.

Sunday June 30. Tres Pistolas (Three Gun Springs) Hike. 8:00am-12:30pm. This is a beautiful trail, uphill, rocky trail with lots of views along the way and lovely shade at the top. If the group agrees, will continue a short distance on the trail towards Oso Pass (more gradual and more shade) as few people are aware of this part of the trail. We will take breaks along the way and a snack or lunch break at top so bring food and water. Route is 5 miles + (max of 6 if we do the Oso pass portion) and approx 2,100 of elevation gain. Limited shade. Sunscreen and hat are a must; walking sticks are recommended. Dogs must be approved by leader 2 days in advance.
We’ll embark on an easy ~3.5 mile hike that incorporates a one-hour outdoor yoga and mindfulness break midway. Includes 300 feet of elevation gain and amazing views of the mountains. Limited to 15 participants, and children over the age of 12 are welcome when accompanied by parent or legal guardian.
Friday, July 28. ZWAT Tour of Vivarium Exhibit – Albuquerque Museum. 11am-12:30pm. Latin for “place of life,” Vivarium demonstrates how contemporary painters create narratives that highlight the complex intersections between humans and the non-human living world. These works counter the prevailing belief that “4 legs are good, but 2 legs are better” by depicting animals as protagonists through a variety of cultural lenses and including references to relevant historical issues. This special tour is open to all but will have a zero waste emphasis. The tour is limited to 12 participants, so sign up early. Admission to the museum on Sunday morning is free.

Friday, June 7: Sierra Club and Beer-Wandering in the Clear Light of New Mexico. David Ryan (coauthor of the most recent edition of 60 Hikes) will be speaking at the about his new book Wandering in the Clear Light of New Mexico. Wandering in the Clear Light of New Mexico expands upon the themes of exploring and wandering found within the 60 Hikes book to include the entire state. The new book is about places that you can only find in New Mexico and that are compelling enough and important enough to warrant a drive across the country to check out. Our nation has only 25 UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites. Three of them are in New Mexico – more than any other state. And when you add in the state’s amazing landforms, distinct sense of place, archaeological sites, and locations of historical and cultural significance, you have an amazing state for wandering and exploring. Wandering in the Clear Light of New Mexico is for those already living in the state, planning to visit the state, and for those who may have forgotten what makes New Mexico so special.
