Tell Grant County To Stop Paying To Poison And Trap Wildlife

For years, Grant County has contracted with a federal agency called Wildlife Services to kill native wildlife like coyotes within the county. The agency uses indiscriminate and cruel methods like traps and poisons, and our tax dollars should not be paying for that.

Because of lax reporting, isn’t even clear what Wildlife Services has been doing with the money or what effect their actions have had. In the 18 years this contract has been in effect, only a single, one-page report has been made to the county. Now the contract’s renewal is coming up again and the county commission needs to hear from you!

Tell them not to renew this senseless waste of taxpayer dollars. There are better alternatives that are more effective, less costly and safer for everyone than littering the land with traps and poisons. Please fill out the form on this page – and personalize your note especially if you enjoy the outdoors and wildlife in Grant County or if you’ve had a negative experience with traps.

  1. Contact your county commissioners and ask them not to renew Wildlife Services’ contract. You can click on the link at the bottom or find the contact information from your commissioner in Grant County.
  2. Please attend the County Commission meeting in person! It will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 19,  at the Grant County Administration Center at 1400 Highway 180 East in Silver City [ link to calendar ]. If you can go, please RSVP to Alysha Shaw, who is coordinating speakers and testimony.

To RSVP or for more information, please contact Alysha Shaw at 505-795-8096 or ashaw@wildearthguardians.org.
