Happy Birthday Excursiones!

Excursiones a la Naturaleza de Nuevo Mexico is a year old!

And what have we been doing all this time? Having fun, of course, inviting members of the Spanish speaking community to come explore with us the foothills of the Sandia Mountains and a little bit higher too, as well as the bosque of the Rio Grande.

Last year we visited the Bosque del Apache NWR thanks to Friends of Bosque del Apache’s invitation and the volunteers who came with us: birders, interpreters, photographers and accompaniers.  In addition, we have connected with Valle delOro NWF and will be visiting for a second time this July. Our most enthusiastic participants did a rueda de bachata (music included) on the ridge after climbing at Kasha Katuwe/Tent Rocks National Monuments.

Our participant’s ages span from 3 to 84 years old. Ninety seven percent of our excursionistas have expressed that they had never had a chance to visit any of these natural places before.  Most of our participants are women, and lately their teenage children are joining them in our outings.

Recently, Paulina Diaz, one of our participants, become certified by the RGC of the SC as our new bilingual (sp-eng) volunteer outings leader.  Last week, Pau lead us on her first walk through the bosque (photo above).

Excursiones a la Naturaleza de Nuevo Mexico is a year old, and we will be celebrating later this month with a Dia de Campo!  Happy Birthday Excursiones. It is very rewarding to be working with the community and sharing my love for the outdoors.

Thank you!
