Nation’s largest grassroots environmental group praises work to protect New Mexico’s environment
Albuquerque. The Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club on Thursday announced that it has endorsed Teresa Leger Fernandez for the open U.S. House seat in New Mexico’s Third Congressional District.
“We are very pleased to endorse Teresa Leger Fernandez for Congress in Northern New Mexico,” said Rio Grande Chapter Political Chair Richard Barish. “The Sierra Club has a rigorous endorsement process. We send out questionnaires, interview candidates, and require a two-thirds vote of two Club entities. Teresa stood out as a passionate and committed environmentalist. She understands the urgency of this moment and the need to take action to ensure the health of our planet for our children and generations to follow.”
“The last three years have been a very difficult time for the environment at the national level,” said Susan Martin, a Rio Grande Chapter volunteer and a member of the national Sierra Club Political Committee. “We need environmental champions in Congress. Teresa will work to protect our water, our air, and the wonderful natural and cultural places that make our state such a special place to live. “
“Teresa has a long history of involvement in the community in Northern New Mexico,” said Camilla Feibelman, Rio Grande Chapter director. “She has volunteered and worked as an attorney on such diverse issues as voting rights, housing, immigration, women’s issues and environmental matters.”
Along with our endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Leger Fernandez’s campaign. “The strength of the Rio Grande Chapter is our tens of thousands of members,” Feibelman said. “We have a strong core of dedicated volunteers who will connect with voters and let them know that Teresa Leger Fernandez will work for climate solutions and environmental protection. Our volunteers will work to ensure that Teresa is elected, because we know that Teresa will fight to ensure a habitable planet where New Mexico’s children and grandchildren can survive and thrive.”
