Albuquerque, NM – Just moments ago the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rolled back its Methane Waste Rule just seven days after the Trump administration gutted EPA rules to reduce methane pollution (see the release below). The Agency’s own analysis has found that rolling back the BLM methane rule will cost Americans more than $1 billion in wasted natural gas and pollution. Sec. Zinke’s repeal of the BLM methane waste rule fails to meet the BLM’s legal obligation to protect the American taxpayer and western communities, despite bipartisan opposition in Congress and a half-million Americans submitting comments in opposition to the rollback. A legal challenge to Sec. Zinke’s repeal of the BLM methane waste rule is almost certain.

“Oil and gas companies are using their influence on the Trump Administration to put our communities at risk in favor of their own profits. We want to see industry that is coming to New Mexico and taking public resources off public lands to give our state a fair shake and support these job-creating, royalty-increasing, health-improving rules to stop oil and gas waste and pollution. We want oil and gas companies stand up against this rollback that will mean more wasted natural gas, less money for impacted communities and more air and climate pollution from public and tribal lands.”
