President Trump has been signaling for months that he intends to undermine the November election. He has taken actions to try to do this, for instance, by seeking to restrict mail-in voting. We can expect he will do everything he can to keep eligible voters from casting their ballots and to prevent valid votes from being counted so his corruption can continue without oversight from Congress.

We do not know how Trump’s actions will affect us here in New Mexico. We can be confident that our Secretary of State and Attorney General will do everything they can to protect our vote. However, as individuals we also need to take all prudent actions to ensure everyone’s vote is counted. This article will address what you can and should do to protect the vote.

Check your registration often

NM has strict statutory guidelines that govern the removal of voters from the voter rolls, so it is unlikely you will be removed. But the safest course is to check your registration. It’s easy to do that at nmvote.org.

Early in-person voting is election protection

Election day is when you are most likely to encounter problems with in-person voting. But you can’t be affected by problems at polling sites on Election Day — or by problems with mail ballots — if you vote early and in-person. New Mexico has lots of sites for early in-person voting with accommodating hours. Put a date and backup date to vote early and in-person on your calendar, and bring friends and family with you. Encourage others to vote early. You can find voting times and locations at your county clerk’s website, which you can find at nmvote.org.

Key dates for early voting
October 6 – Early voting begins at your county clerk’s office (the clerk’s annex in Bernalillo County)
October 17 – Early voting begins at other locations in your county
October 31 – Last day of early voting

If you must vote by mail, make sure your ballot is in the mail early

On September 14, the Supreme Court denied Trump’s request for an emergency order that would allow him to set the rules for who gets to vote by mail. As a result, voting by mail is an option. If you do vote by mail, and if you are not on the permanent mail ballot list, request your mail-in ballot early (TODAY, for instance). You can request a mail-in ballot at nmvote.org.

Fill your ballot out right away once you get it. Your best option is to return it yourself to a dropbox or to an early or election day polling site. If you have to mail your ballot, get it in the mail early. You won’t be affected if there are problems with the mail near Election Day if you put your ballot in the mail early. Also, be certain to fill it out correctly so it won’t be rejected.

Poll monitors keep an eye on polling sites from the outside, report problems and help voters with voting issues. If you can, sign up for training and two-hour shifts organized by Common Cause NM.

Be ready for a sustained mobilization, if needed after the election, to enforce the results

In the interest of covering all eventualities, you should know what to do if Trump does send troops or ICE to polling sites or interferes with the counting of ballots anywherein the country, or if he or his lackeys refuse to seat Democrats who were duly elected to serve in the US House of Representatives. If demonstrations become necessary, please look for additional details on our Facebook page or your local Indivisible group.

Make sure you vote!
Political strategist Anat Shenker-Osorio says “your vote is your ICE whistle.” It is also how you act to protect our public lands, keep unwanted data centers out of our communities, protect science and so much more. Be sure to vote yourself and try to make sure your family members and friends vote, too.

I am hopeful our democracy will survive. I hope I can look back in January after a new Congress is sworn in and have a good laugh at how needlessly worried I was. But if that is going to happen, we all need to do our part to zealously protect the election in November.

NM House

HD 4, San Juan – Joseph Hernandez WIN
Rep. Joseph Hernandez was an ally of the Chapter even before he ran for his State House seat. In his first term, he sponsored  the Green Amendment; a bill that created the Solar Access Fund within the NM Finance Authority to provide money to local governments for solar projects; and a bill to fund the cleanup of contaminated sites, including uranium mining sites.

HD 13, Bernalillo – Patricia Roybal Cabellero WIN
Long-time Rep. Patricia Roybal Caballero has sponsored an impressively long list of important environmental bills, including the Community Solar Act, the Energy Transition Act, the Green Amendment, various geothermal and solar tax credit bills, and bills prevent New Mexico from becoming a nuclear dumping ground. She is especially interested in bills addressing environmental justice.

HD 14, Bernalillo – Miguel Garcia WIN
Rep. Miguel Garcia has a 97% lifetime environmental voting record according to the most recent Conservation Voters NM scorecard. While being laser-focused on bills to hep his community, he is a legislator that we know we can always count on to vote to protect the environment.

HD 16, Bernalillo – Yanira Gurrola WIN
Rep. Yanira Gurrola Valenzuela advocated for environmental sustainability, clean energy and other climate solutions to protect our natural resources and combat climate change. She sponsored legislation promoting electric school buses, clean car tax credits, and water reuse requirements. She is committed to continuing to work on issues of water and climate.

HC 24, Bernalillo – Elizabeth Thomson WIN
Rep. Liz Thomson has been rock-solid supporter of environmental and other progressive legislation during her fourteen hears in the State House. As a pediatric physical therapist and the mother of an autistic son, Rep. Thomson has focused on providing healthcare and opportunities for children, especially those with disabilities

HD 30, Bernalillo – E. Diane Torres-Velasquez WIN
Rep. E. Diane Torres-Velásquez has a PhD in education and has worked with grassroots groups to establish public education as a fundamental right in New Mexico and to make sure that there was an equitable distribution of education resources. While the focus of her legislative work has also been education, she has been a steadfast supporter of the Chapter’s environmental priorities.

HD 33, Doña Ana – Micaela Lara Cadena WIN
Micaela Cadena serves the Mesilla, NM area where she was born.  She has helped lead the fight against Project Jupiter.  Cadena championed the decriminalisation of abortion in 2021.  She is the vice chair of the House Tax and Revenue committee helping ensure progressive tax policy and advocating for policies like ensuring a used electric vehicle tax credit.  

HD 34 Doña Ana – Raymundo Lara WIN
Ray Lara is the chair of the House Democratic Caucus. He has sponsored bills addressing critical matters such as voting rights and clean fuels.

HD 37, Dona Ana County – Lori Martinez WIN
Lori Martinez is the Executive Director of Ngage New Mexico, an education nonprofit. She will bring her expertise in education and mental health to the House as she works to fill gaps in services by creating new programs and opportunities, advocating for healthcare initiatives, including Paid Family Leave, and drafting legislature to restrict private-equity control of hospitals, energy and data centers.

HD 40, multiple NE counties – Nancy Wright LOSS
Nancy Wright is a pediatrician with a master’s degree in public health who understands the intersection of the environment and health. As a legislator, she want to address global warming, environmental toxins, and green space, which she emphasizes is important to children.

HD 41, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Taos Counties – Yolanda Jaramillo WIN
Yolanda “Pancha” Jaramillo is a retired educator and behavioral health advocate who is an acequia leader in her community and an advocate for acequias. She serves on the board of the NM Acequia Association and as an appointed member of the NM Acequia Commission. Yolanda says says she is “all about clean water.”

HD 69, NW & Central counties – Michelle Paulene Abeyta WIN
Rep. Paulene Abeyta’s indigenous culture has nurtured in her a deep understanding of our connection to the natural world and the importance of protecting it. Her work in her first legislative term has focused on children, healthcare, and tribal issue while at the same time supporting our environmental issues, including sponsoring a bill to clean up uranium and other contaminated sites.

District 70, San Miguel & Torrance counties – Anita Gonzales WIN
Representative Anita Gonzales has been a leader on healthcare, education and the environment. She represents her District through advancing rural development and public education and continuing the fight for remediation of the impacts of of the 2022 Calf/Hermit fire. Committed to protecting Northern New Mexico’s environment and culture, she champions water rights, land stewardship, and community traditions.

State-wide races

Governor – Deb Haaland WIN
The Chapter is proud to endorse Deb Haaland for governor. She formerly served as the congressperson from New Mexico’s first congressional district and as Secretary of the Interior in the Biden administration. She was one of the first two native women to be elected to serve in congress, and she was the first native cabinet secretary. If elected, she would be the nation’s first native governor.

Secretary Haaland pairs the deep-rooted values of her native heritage with a clear, actionable climate agenda. As Secretary of the Interior, she reduced methane waste on federal and tribal lands, accelerated permitting for clean energy projects, and launched large-scale orphaned well remediation—cutting emissions while creating jobs.

Deb Haaland embodies the values that the Chapter looks for in a governor: respect for the land, responsibility to future generations, and courage in the face of injustice. Her life and career reflect a deep belief that our environment is not a commodity, but a sacred trust. And she understands that environmental stewardship is inseparable from protecting families, water, and livelihoods. She is committed to ensuring that no community is left behind.

As governor, Sec. Haaland will commit New Mexico to net-zero emissions by 2050, fully implement the Clean Cars and Trucks standards, modernize building codes for energy efficiency, use the state’s purchasing power to expand renewable energy markets, and place New Mexico on a path to a sustainable water future. For all of these reasons, Deb Haaland is our choice for governor!

Commission of Public Lands – Matthew McQueen LOSS
The Chapter endorses Rep. Matthew McQueen for Commissioner of Public Lands. The Land Commissioner leads a department that oversees our nine million surface acres of state lands, including special places for outdoor recreation and wildlife habitat and lands that earn billions of dollars to support our public schools, universities, and hospitals.

Rep. McQueen has served for twelve years in the State House of Representatives, ten of those as chair of the House Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Committee. During his  time in the Legislature, Rep. McQueen has been one of our go-to legislators to sponsor environmental legislation, and he has successfully shepherded many of our bills into law. Rep. McQueen will bring deep policy expertise, legislative leadership, and a lifelong commitment to conservation as Land Commissioner.

Among his many accomplishments, Rep. McQueen has held the oil and gas companies accountable by restoring the state’s ability to levy fines and penalties on bad actors and by raising the royalty rate in the Permian Basin. He has fought to protect our natural resources, such as the Gila River, and he led efforts to prevent the storage of high-level nuclear waste in our state. Last year, he worked with a broad coalition of stakeholders to successfully reform our Department of Game Fish into a modern Department of Wildlife, and he was instrumental in enacting a ban on cruel trapping on state public lands. In his professional career as an attorney, Rep. McQueen has specialized in land conservation.

Rep. McQueen recognizes the urgency of diversifying projects on public lands toward renewable energy, and he will expand leases for wind, solar, and battery storage projects on State Trust Lands as part of the Land Office mission of ensuring fair returns for New Mexico schools and beneficiaries.

He worked to block Holtec’s proposed temporary nuclear waste storage facility; engaged in wildfire prevention strategies; and recognized the urgency of proactive land management in a changing climate.

Finally, McQueen approaches economic development with a clear-eyed commitment to accountability. Whether evaluating large-scale data center proposals, carbon sequestration initiatives, or energy leases, he insists on strong safeguards, fair returns, and long-term benefits for New Mexicans—not short-term gains for outside interests.

Secretary of State – Amanda López Askin WIN
Doña Ana County Clerk Amanda López Askin was raised in Las Cruces by a mother who had “the Spanish spanked out of her” and as a result, became an advocate for voting rights in order to get “a seat at the table of democracy.” López Askin inherited that passion, and after a PhD and a career as a therapist and teacher, applied for and was appointed as Doña Ana County Clerk when a vacancy arose in 2018. She was reelected in 2022.

López Askin was appointed as Clerk five days before the 2018 election and was immediately confronted by falsehoods and election-denial in the close Torres Small-Herrell congressional election that year. She emphasizes that her experience with election-denial, disruption, personal attacks, and threats throughout her tenure as Doña Ana County Clerk has prepared her to be a steady hand to guide the state through the polarized elections we are facing in the future.

As an hispanic woman, López Askin understands the fear and intimidation that some communities experience when federal law enforcement officers are present in the community on election day, which she has seen firsthand in southern New Mexico, and will do everything she can to ensure that it does not occur.

County races

Bernalillo County Commission, District 5 – Eric Olivas WIN
Commissioner Eric Olivas has been an environmental champion on the County Commission. He recently sponsored a bill that imposes renewable energy, water-use offset, and labor requirements on any data centers built in the county.

Doña Ana County Commission, District 1 – Daisy Maldonado WIN
Daisy Maldonado is a grassroots leader and community organizer who has spent more than a decade advocating for environmental justice for the people of Doña Ana County. Most recently, she has led the charge against the Project Jupiter data center, a sprawling project that has proposed to emit more pollution than the cities of Albuquerque and Las Cruces combined while greatly taxing the area’s scarce water resources. Daisy also served on the Sustainable Economy Advisory Council to help envision the state’s transition away from extractive industry reliance.

Santa Fe County Commission District 1 – Henry Roybal WIN
We are proud to once again endorse Henry Roybal as our choice for Santa Fe County Commissioner, Dist. 1. A life-long resident of the Pojoaque Valley, Commissioner Roybal was first elected to the Santa Fe County Commissioner in 2015. He won a second term in January 2019. He has proven himself a true friend on the issues that matter most to Sierra Club members, in particular, balancing stewardship of the land and its natural resources with economic development.

New Mexico did not completely escape the rightward winds of this past election, but all-in-all, escaped relatively unscathed. We did lose a seat in both the state House and the Senate. On the House side, Tara Jaramillo won a difficult seat in the center and south of the state in 2022 after Rebecca Dow resigned the seat to run for governor that year, but could not hold off Dow in her return this year.

In the Senate, we picked up one and lost two. After Siah Correa Hemphill’s late withdrawal, Dems could not find a candidate who commanded Siah’s support, and we lost that one. Jerry Ortiz y Pino retired after a very distinguished career, and that seat was redistricted to make it much more conservative. Michelle Sandoval apparently narrowly lost, although a recount is still pending as I write this.

On the other side of the ledger, Angel Charley, an accomplished young native candidate was uncontested after Republican blunders, and we picked up that seat. She joins Pauline Abeyta and Joseph Hernandez on the House side as a new generation of progressive native leadership in the legislature.

Senator-elect Cindy Nava became the first DACA recipient to win a legislative race in the entire country. We gained some other great newcomers as well, including Sarah Silva, a community organizer from Las Cruces, Heather Berghmans, and Anita Gonzales, a Chapter Excom member. Some of our established champions survived well-funded challenges, including Nathan Small, Carrie Hamblen, and Martin Hickey.

We should also acknowledge and offer our thanks to some outstanding candidates who worked very hard and ran great campaigns for tough seats in tough year, but came up short. In addition to Tara Jaramillo, there is Vicky Estrada-Bustillo, Athena Christodoulou, and Gabby Begay. Hopefully, we haven’t seen the last of them.

My bottom-line assessment is because of the turnover in Democratic seats due to retirements and incumbent losses in primaries, we have a more progressive and environment-friendly legislature.

Finally, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to our volunteers who called and walked for our candidates. You are the source of our power in the legislature. You not only help us elect good legislators, but legislators pay attention to us in large part because they know that with your efforts, we can influence the outcome of elections. Without you, we could not accomplish our legislative agenda.

City Council District 1: Alma Castro
Castro’s lifelong embrace of the environment and her pledge to electrify city equipment, increase transit frequency, offer rebates for energy- and water-efficient appliances to income-constrained Santa Feans, and support gas-free new construction, won our support.

Council District 2: Michael Garcia
Councilor Garcia chairs the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Group, which has produced a pathbreaking strategic plan that can lead toward a city much safer and enjoyable to walk and bike. The Rio Grande Chapter is proud to endorse him for another term.

Council District 3: Pilar Faulkner
Pilar Faulkner is a small-business owner who was born and raised in Northern New Mexico. She pledges to protect open spaces, conserve natural resoucres, and protect Santa Fe’s  night skies by limiting light pollution.

Council District 4: Jamie Cassutt
Councilor Cassutt chairs the Metropolitan Planning Organization, where she has consistently advocated for funding projects that provide more trails and sidewalks as well as connections among them. She has been a strong advocate for equitable climate solutions.

Santa Fe Community College Board: Lina German
Lina Germann, resident of Santa Fe for 26 years, holds both a Ph.D in chemistry and an MBA.  A self described citizen lobbyist, she is a firm believer in the college emphasizing STEM education and environmental studies.  Germann prides herself as a scientist on knowing how to ask the right questions and prodding for data on trends.  She would like to put underused portions of the campus to use for better and more courses.  And Germann would welcome Santa Feans to come to the campus for monthly series of talks and workshops, especially related to the environment.

Ballot measure: Yes
The Rio Grande Chapter supports the Santa Fe affordable housing initiative, which would provide a dedicated funding source for the City’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund by imposing a 3% tax on the portion of the sale price of Santa Fe homes that exceeds $1 million.

Albuquerque

City Council District 2: Joaquin Baca
Baca is running for the open seat currently held by Ike Benton, who is retiring. Baca is a hydrologist whose career has focused on both protection of water resources and riparian restoration, policy-wise as well as on the ground. Joaquin is also a current member of the MRGCD board and has held an array of public and nonprofit board positions with conservation of natural resources as the common theme.

City Council District 4: Abby Foster
We’re lucky to have Abby Foster. Foster has made it her mission to unseat a bad incumbent in City Council District 4. Foster states that “it is difficult to overstate the urgency with which humanity needs to act to mitigate climate change” and that “we need to work on electrifying everything,” exactly the kind of commitment to addressing climate that we need on Council!

City Council District 6: Nichole Rogers
A native New Mexican raising her kids in South Los Altos, Rogers is a New Mexico First board member and has worked in the City’s Office of Equity & Inclusion, experiences that led to her emphasis on collaboration between community and government. Rogers sees the need for concrete climate solutions, like providing ways for more and safer cycling, better public transport and helping with conversion to electrification.

Public Schools Board District 1: Janelle Astorga
Astorga is a young organizer who has worked on education issues from a community perspective since she was in high school, including opposing the privatization of education. She is now co-director the Learning Alliance of NM and development director at SWOP.

Public Schools Board District 2: Ronalda Tome-Warito
Tome-Warito is a Native woman who for 25 years has advocated for Native students with disabilities. She will bring a knowledgeable voice on special education and the needs of Native students to the board.

Public Schools Board District 4: Heather Benavidez
Benavidez is CEO of The Arc of New Mexico, which advocates for New Mexicans living with disabilities. She emphasizes the accurate teaching of science so that students will be prepared to address climate change and have a place where they will be able to thrive and raise their families.

Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District: Daniel Conklin, Maria Young, and Thomas Allen
Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District is little known, but administers important conservation, restoration, and urban agriculture programs. Conklin, Allen, and Young are incumbents who have demonstrated their commitment to the restoration and conservation missions of Ciudad by their support for and active participation in these programs. If you live in the district, you will be able to vote for all three.

Las Cruces

Mayor: Kasandra Gandara
Gandara says Las Cruces needs to aggressively address climate change, and the two-term councilor walks the walk. She supported the city’s climate action plan, which has allowed it receive 25% of its electricity from solar, and a plastic-bag ban, electric buses, and the City’s PowerUp Expo to educate citizens about electrification.

City Council District 1: Cassie McClure
McClure is a city Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member.  She is a cyclist who enjoys seeing the agricultural side of Las Cruces through its ditchbanks and trails. She supports moving away from fossil fuels as fast as possible.

City Council District 2: Tessa Abeyta
Incumbent Abeyta’s career has been dedicated to advocacy for children, public health and the environment. She has been a Las Cruces Green Chamber of Commerce board member and an advocate for the formation of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.

City Council District 4: Johana Bencomo
Johana Bencomo is a New Mexico Environmental Law Center board member and has been executive director for NM CAFÉ. She is proud of her votes to end use of plastic bags in Las Cruces and to create the crisis intervention team.

Las Cruces Public School Board District 1: Patrick Nolan
Nolan has been involved with the Green Chamber since he joined as executive director of the Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks. He also served as union representative for American Federation of Teachers NM.

Public School Board District 4: Teresa Tenorio
An incumbent, Tenorio is proud of her votes to approve an equity and excellence policy and a gender-inclusive schools policy, as well as policy in response to the Martinez-Yazzie decision in support of at-risk students.
