El Paso is again “The Sun City,” but it now has an opportunity to be “SolSmart” too.
In a surprising settlement of its rate case in Texas, El Paso Electric in August completely withdrew its proposed fees on the sun.
EPE had in August 2015 proposed a new rate structure that would have caused its residential customers to be separated into two residential rate classes: those with solar and those without. Under that proposal, unwarranted charges would have penalized customers who had made investments in rooftop solar for using clean energy from the sun.

The El Paso Sierra Club Group and the Greater Big Bend Coalition are petitioning U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and President Obama to establish an international park on the Rio Grande.
The proposed park boundaries include Big Bend National Park and protected wildlife areas in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Coahuila.

A growing number of people in El Paso are supporting a new conservation movement to protect the Castner Range area of the Franklin Mountains in northeast El Paso as a national monument.
The Castner Range is home to more than 650 species of Chihuahuan Desert plants, 33 species of reptiles, over 100 species of birds and nearly 30 species of mammals. There are also hundreds – if not thousands – of species of invertebrates and microorganisms yet to be discovered. Supporting local conservation efforts is a high priority, and many people in El Paso are involved with groups like the Sierra Club, Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition and the Audubon Society.

El Paso Electric’s proposed rate increase for El Paso customers is moving forward to administrative-law judges and the Texas Public Utilities Commission after a non-unanimous settlement with the city of El Paso, which had rejected the company’s rate proposals last year.
Yet to be litigated are terms regarding solar charges and the costs to exit Four Corners Power Plant.
The orginal proposal would have raised most EPE customers’ rates by about 10% but put solar customers into a separate rate class and raised their rates about double that. The proposed settlement no longer segregates solar users in a separate rate class.
