Update: The El Paso City Council unanimously recommended rejecting every single aspect of El Paso Electric’s rate increases, including the solar penalties. The case still has to go through the Public Utilities Commission, and we will update you on how to contact your commissioners. Thank you for responding — your activism worked!

El Paso Electric is proposing a hefty rate hike for its regular customers – and it wants double the rate hike for solar customers.

EPE claims that solar customers increase costs for the rest of the system, but just the opposite is true. Solar installations reduce the need for expensive new power plants and reduce the need to transmit energy over long distances, which results in energy loss and extra fees.

The El Paso City Council has the opportunity to reject El Paso Electric’s unfair rate proposal before it is reviewed by the Texas Public Utilities Commission.
