Sierra Club & (Root) Beer

Sierra Club & (Root) Beer

Please join us for the March Sierra Club and Root Beer this Friday at the Albuquerque Peace and Justice Center. Dr. Sandrine Gaillard will give a workshop entitled “Why You Should Go Solar Now.” Dr. Gaillard is a physicist who in 2015 helped start the Sierra Club’s program to Solarize Santa Fe. She developed a website designed to help homeowners decide if solar is right for them and how to move forward. The information on the website is the basis for her presentation.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about home solar and meet other Sierra Club folks. Light refreshments are offered (yes, including root-beer floats).

Where: Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, 202 Harvard Drive SE, Albuquerque, 87106
When: 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, March 3

Photo of PNM's San Juan Coal Fired Generator Plant for the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter website

By Mona Blaber

In October, Public Service Company of New Mexico withdrew its application to build a $100 million natural-gas plant, good news for ratepayers and those who don’t want increased dependence on climate-damaging energy.

Last year, PNM filed at the Public Regulation Commission for a 187-megawatt natural-gas plant as part of a deal with Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration to retire two units at coal-fired San Juan Generating Station.

The utility withdrew that request because it couldn’t show it needed the added power, and a PRC hearing examiner wrote that evidence showed that the power would be more cost-effectively procured through solar facilities.

This spring, PNM filed the current request — for a smaller, 80-megawatt gas plant and pipeline. Sierra ...

Albuquerque bosque

By Fred Houdek,
Central New Mexico Group chair

The Bosque Action Team continues to meet monthly, and our hikes and activities in the Bosque are increasing in attendance.

The City of Albuquerque has begun the public-input process on Phase 3 of the multi-use trail between Campbell Road and Montaño. The city proposed four alternative route alignments for the trail. The alternatives were to be presented and reviewed at a public meeting on July 26. Just days before the meeting, it was rescheduled for Aug. 11. Neither date was announced except on the city’s website. Only 78 people attended, including several Bosque Action Team members.

On September 9, the city posted the final trail alignment on its website.  To the ...

At the end of September, the Albuquerque City Council unanimously set a goal to get 25 percent of electricity at the city’s facilities from solar energy by 2025.

Achieving this goal will help make Albuquerque a leader in solar energy, decrease air and water pollution and save the city money.

The effort was led by our coalition partner Environment New Mexico and generated thousands of calls and emails to city councilors supporting solar energy.

“I was proud to work with Environment New Mexico to move solar energy forward in the city of Albuquerque,” said Councilor Pat Davis, co-sponsor of the resolution. “Setting a strong solar goal for the City of Albuquerque will provide ...
