Chaco Protection Memorial Passes Unanimously!

Victory!

Terrific victories for all you citizen lobbyists who have been contacting your senators and representatives!

  • HM70, asking the BLM to pausing drilling in the greater Chaco Canyon area, unanimously passed the House State Government, Indian Affairs and Veterans Committee on Tuesday (see photo at top of page).
  • The Senate Conservation Committee on Tuesday passed SB312, requiring investor-owned utilities top provide 50% of their electricity from renewable energy by 2030 and 80% by 2040. This climate-protecting legislation passed 6-3.
  • That committee passed another great bill, HB338, which adjusts the law to make community solar gardens more viable.

Many other bills were postponed — so many of you are showing up and testifying on this legislation that it’s hard ...

Key environment-related bills on tap this week

Lots of key bills, both positive and dangerous, will be heard tomorrow at the New Mexico Legislature. This is a great day to take action by calling or writing legislators, and tomorrow is a great day to be at the Roundhouse if you can.

Click here for contact info for key Senate and House committees. Feeling shy about calling? It’s easy: When you call a legislator’s office, just tell the person who answers the phone that you urge Sen. or Rep. X to vote “no”/”yes” on SB XX or HB XX, and give a brief title for the bill (“Trapping ban on public lands,” etc.). You don’t need to make an argument or explanation. If you don’t want to call, emailing ...

There’s lots of conflicting information floating around about SB210 and HB199,

PNM has been lobbying your legislators for more than a year for a bill that imposes a long list of requirements on solar installers.

While PNM is peddling Senate Bill 210 and House Bill 199 as “consumer protection” bills, but they are really part of an effort to stifle competition from residential solar, which homeowners are increasingly choosing as an alternative to PNM’s expensive mix of mostly coal, nuclear and gas.

This legislation is based on a model by the right-wing, anti-environment consortium ALEC. While much of the worst language has been removed, the legislation is still intended to undermine the residential solar industry, one of New Mexico’s few ...

Locally, the environment won

By Mona Blaber,
Chapter communications coordinator

Many of us are feeling gutted after November 8’s presidential result. The Sierra Club is preparing for a long, difficult battle ahead.

But locally, the elections bring real rays of hope, even in the face of the presidential result.

In the biggest shift, New Mexicans elected a solid pro-environment majority in both the state House and Senate.

  • With this Legislature, we can pass a Renewable Energy Act that requires 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
  • With this Legislature, we can ban cruel trapping on public lands.
  • With this Legislature, we can outlaw coyote-killing contests.

Getting these bills past Gov. Susana Martinez’s veto pen will be challenging. But in 2018, ...

We’re all feeling gutted by the national election results, and as we take time to process, we also must prepare to fight.

But here in New Mexico, your hard work for our endorsed candidates paid off, and we won a solid pro-environment majority in both the state House and Senate.

With our newly elected Legislature, we can…

  • Pass a Renewable Energy Act amendment to require 50% renewable energy in New Mexico by 2030
  • Ban cruel trapping on public lands
  • Outlaw coyote-killing contests
  • Create legislation to safeguard our drinking water from pollution

Getting these bills past the governor’s veto pen will be challenging. But in 2018, we will elect a new governor, ...

Election 2016: Make History

By Susan Martin
Chapter political chair

The most powerful way to protect our water, wildlife, land and climate is through good environmental policy, and the most powerful way to ensure good policy is by electing pro-environ- ment candidates.

The Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter sends questionnaires to and interviews eligible candidates, and two chapter committees must approve every endorsement by a two-thirds vote in order for a candidate to be endorsed. (Incumbents can be judged by their public record rather than a questionnaire).

Our listed candidates include only endorsed candidates who have opposition in the November 8 general election.
